Hurricane-Resistant Landscaping

Tracked across Hurricane Ian, Helene, and Milton โ€” the SW Florida plants that survived, ranked A+ to C. Plus the three layout rules that make any yard more hurricane-resilient.

Hurricane resistance isn't random โ€” it's a function of root depth, trunk flexibility, and canopy density. Our crews tracked which species survived each major SW Florida storm. The findings are below, ranked from A+ (survived Cat 4โ€“5 intact) to C (avoid in exposed sites).

Frequently Asked Questions

What plants survived Hurricane Ian best in SW Florida?+

Sabal palms, Royal palms, Live oaks, Gumbo Limbos, and Sea Grapes had the highest survival rate post-Ian (2022). Areca palm hedges and Clusia hedges also fared well โ€” clumping growth flexes in wind. Worst performers: shallow-rooted Australian Pines and over-pruned Queen palms.

How do I hurricane-proof my landscape?+

Three rules: (1) Plant hurricane-rated species (see our A+ tier above). (2) Avoid over-pruning palms โ€” leave full canopies, not "hurricane cuts" which weaken trunks. (3) Plant trees in groups of 3โ€“5 for mutual wind buffering, not as isolated specimens. Stake young trees the first 18 months.

Should I cut palm fronds before a hurricane?+

No. Despite the persistent myth, full palm canopies survive better than over-pruned ones. The University of Florida IFAS confirmed: hurricane-cut palms (left with only top fronds) had higher mortality post-Charley and post-Ian. Leave the canopy alone.

Are palm trees better than oak trees in hurricanes?+

It depends. Sabal palms and Royal palms survive Cat 5 winds intact โ€” better than nearly any tree. But Live oaks and Sand Live oaks also routinely survive. The difference: oaks drop branches, palms flex. Both can work โ€” avoid Laurel oak and Australian Pine.
